This is a conversion of Zippy Race - an early 1983 arcade game by Irem to the OCS Amiga.

Please note, that this is a fan conversion - no reverse engineering was performed in any capacity. This is not a transcoded game and as such the entire game was written by hand to match the original arcade game as closely as possible. There will be some differences.

Features:

Full Zippy Race game with 500cc, 750cc and 1200cc loops

  • All stages faithfully recreated
  • Arcade Music converted to ProTracker format
  • Optimized for speed, runs at 50/60fps on any Amiga with 1Meg

As this is a fan conversion, it is being given away for free.

The entire game was written in C with some assembly

Controls: Plug in a Joystick

  • Fire - Accelerate
  • Fire Button 2/Joystick Down - Brake

Credits and Thanks as follows

  • Main Programming - MVG
  • Amiga Music/SFX Conversion - Estrayk
  • NRV Compression Routines - Ross
  • PTPlayer routines - Frank Wille
  • Sprite Loading - Wei Ju Wu

Inspiration and Guidance - McGeezer, h0ffman, Jotd, Rob Smith, Photon, Galahad, EAB Forum etc etc

Developed with VSCode-Amiga-Debug plugin by BartmanAbyss

Hello, in one of my last issues of Retro News Flash, I covered the game Zippy Racer and ran a short report on it. It´s a really great game, I really liked it. All the best from Magisthan´s Spielekiste. 🙂

great coverage. thank you for sharing!

Thanks for the version 1.0.

Is there a WHDload slave for this new version? I ran the lha version but it does not have a quit key to return to Workbench.

jotd is working on an update. hopefully soon. ill share it here when its ready

Very similar to the original arcade beside some small things like the countdown missing at the start or some car behavior! Will put it in my 1200 when i visit italy later on and see if my brother loves it- was one of its favorite arcades

I <3 MVG. He makes me swoon

A very good arcade game for the Amiga. I included it in my video along with other games released in April.

awesome video. thanks for sharing!

Very good game. Enjoy it a lot on my A500. I switched to NTSC and liked the game even better. Great job!! Only thing I miss is high score save.

It is just great to see someone doing games on original hardware. Runs perfect!

Spy Hunter is another game like this that I guess would run just as good if you did it :)

Spy Hunter was the first game I thought about however I think it was too advanced for my first Amiga project so i went a little easier :)

I think Spy Hunter can be done, but i think it might need AGA as it has more colors on screen

Maybe reduce the colors  a bit. I am no expert but should not be very noticeable I think. Cool you though about it. Really a classic! Your programming skills seams great and no problem with AGA but OCS is where the real challenge is ;)

Mm, launching from (RAM) my 060 1200 causes a software failure. Will try other options.

Running it with the OG chipset enabled doesn't work either. Trying the ADF.

thanks for the bug report. ill check into it

Hi Dimitris, I'll try to drill down some more on the circumstances . Like the #ID of the Software Failure.

let me know the exact Amiga config you are using . i should be able to reproduce it here. I have an 060 + A1200 setup here

A1200 68060 50MHz Rev6 (Warp1260) Alice 8374 Rev. 3-4PAL Lisa4203  Workbench in RTG mode (Warp) AmigaOS 3.2.1 (V47.10) Exec / WB version V47.8. TCP/IP Roadshow, Audio AHI, 256MB FASTRAM. Starting ZippyRace results in an instant reset - flashing Power LED and a black screen. The software failure appears after a reset (CTRL+A+A). Error: 8000 0004 Task: 4087B938. Hope this helps. Will test the ADF.

Great game!

thank you for the awesome coverage!

Thanks for the game.

I remember this from the arcade. Fun game and very cool you got this running at full speed on A500. I tried the game on my A4000 but will test on A500 later. First level seams great then there are bugs here and there. Keep on the great work and looking forward to the full version. Thanks!

Very nice game!

looking good!

Hi, just played the game. Very nice!

It's just as tough as I remember from playing this in the arcade in the 80s as a kid. Unless JOTD includes an optional cheat mode in a later WHDload slave I'm never gonna be able to complete this. Oh well, at least I no longer have to waste all my pocket money playing this any more **smile**.

Great conversion looking amazing already. Keep up the great work.

EDIT (about an hour later) Holy s*** I just did it I won the race! (I took a picture of the NY screen and can supply proof if need be lol)

Amazing that a good strategy was to SLOW DOWN on the offroad stages.

So I get to the end and... it starts again. Man, experts of this game could have been at it all day on one credit.

My final score was 144400 (yes it had that many 4s in it, again I can supply photographic proof).

Again, great conversion.

congrats on beating it! you got the strategy down :)

the arcade game just loops and gets harder (750cc, 1200cc) so the conversion just follows the same path.

its not a difficult game, but just requires muscle memory and yes. slow down on the curves!

Hey Jim. Last Alphas worked with the same WHDLoad installer. The third one not, needs a.exe.
Cheers.

ah i renamed it to 'ZippyRace'. didnt like a.exe :) , ill look into it

I tried renaming it to a.exe, but it still crashes out, says it's the wrong version.

Need to wait for JOTD to make an updated slave file.

Yeah. Probably we have to wait for the final version.

the 1.0 final should be soon. just a few more bugs to fix and ill have JOTD update the slave

Ultra smooth engine. It would be pity if it wasn't used also for something else with more eye-catching visuals. Looking forward to it.

thanks, already thinking about the next project. we will see

Very clean and fast arcade conversion, especially for OCS Amiga standards. The game is strongly reminiscent of the Master System classic "Action Fighter" from 1986 and already feels like a finished version. Our German-language preview can be found at 02:36:43. English subtitles are also available. Subscription to our YouTube and Twitch channel is welcome. 🙂

Great game, thanks.

Dimitris, it's not running at all on an Amiga equipped with a PiStorm. It boots from floppy, but when the game loads, the initial screen is black with a side bar, the Floppy drive LED stays on (even though it's not loading anymore), and it stays like that.

If booting from the "HDD", and starting the game from the inserted floppy, it crashes before displaying anything.

Let me know if I can be of any help. It's an A600 with a PiStorm600, RaspberryPi Zero 2W, 3.2 ROMs.

By the way I have the means of capturing the video output of all my tests, if that helps.

I ran what i think is a comparable configuration in WinUAE. is this the behavior you are seeing?

Exactly this.

Please retest with Alpha 2

Hey MVG, working great now, booting from floppy works fine, from the Workbench it doesn't work. Please see the video. Another minor thing is that the floppy drive light continues on all the time after loading.

Thanks ever so much.

good to hear. will work on a larger round of bug fixes over the next few days. appreciate the bug reports!

please reach out if you need me to test it on the real machine. Cheerio

alpha 3 has been released. should address the drive motor issue and should also run from wb without issue

Nice stuff! - Great work MVG!

Was looking forward for this since I saw the youtube video of the work in progress!

What next?

Very nice game!

This looks nice! Will try the game soon on my real A500. Thanks for your work on this game. It is nice that you kind of do your own version I think.

Finally another good Arcade game for Amiga !!!

Many, many thanks for this great conversion :)

Excited to give this a try!

NEAT!

Kudos for your efforts, MVG and team (specially my mate Estrayk, what a legend!)
